Prospective students can also participate in the annual Competitive Music Scholarship, an award renewable annually and given in addition to a music performance grant.
Alumni of the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts may additionally be considered for a full-tuition scholarship. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and 25 ACT and audition with the School of Music.
Graduates
General Degrees
Students desiring admission to a music degree program must perform an audition for
a panel of graduate music faculty members. This performance should show evidence of
competence and is rated by the faculty as to the ability and potential of the individual.
Auditions will take place each semester no later than the day designated by the University
as the last day to register for a class.
Performance Degrees
Applicants seeking admission to the MM: Instrumental Performance, MM: Piano Performance & Pedagogy, or MM: Vocal Performance & Pedagogy will submit a list of performed repertoire and present a live audition before a panel of graduate music faculty members.
Keyboard & Instrumental: The audition should be at least 20 minutes of music or a minimum of two works in contrasting styles.
Vocal: The audition should be by memory and at least 20 minutes of upper-level repertoire representing each of the following areas: Baroque literature, German lieder, French melodie, opera aria, and American or British art song.
MM Conducting: Applicants will come to campus the semester before enrollment and conduct an ensemble rehearsal as their live audition. However, students may submit recordings of recent live performances leading an ensemble. The video angle should preferably focus on the conductor and be from the ensemble's view of the conductor.
MM Music Education: No audition is required for this degree.
Entrance Exams
Applicants to graduate music programs must pass an Entrance Exam before beginning graduate coursework. The Entrance Exam must be taken only once and during regularly scheduled exam time. The exam includes music theory and music history and literature.
